Schools: Lack
of existing infrastructure and marginal conditions in rural school
settings are not conducive for learning or teaching. Schools in these communities
often consist of one or two rooms without doors or windows or even a
blackboard. Teachers take positions in rural communities during
the school year but often leave their posts for weeks at a time due to
lack of adequate housing. They rarely bring their families to the
rural village to live.
Realizing the importance of education
for rural children and using the same methods used in constructing medical
clinics, Mano a Mano has decided to embark on improving the learning
environment of children in selected communities by:
Building or repairing school rooms
Building housing for teachers and
their families
In some cases Mano a Mano might repair
existing school rooms by installing a roof, a cement floor, a door, a
window, a plastic see-through panel in the roof for lighting, plaster
on walls and a blackboard. In most instances school rooms will
be added, constructed from brick, finished with white plaster, with a
clean look. For the teachers and their families, a small modern
apartment will be constructed, providing an incentive for teachers to
relocate to the community and to reduce teacher turn-over. For
most of the communities in which Mano a Mano operates a clinic, improving
their school so that it is safe and conducive to learning is the community's
highest priority.
Dream
Fund: Fondo Sonar (Dream Fund in English) provides education
support for youth who would otherwise have
no means to complete high school or post-secondary education programs.
The program currently supports 21 impoverished youth
who are attending high schools, tech schools and universities. As little
as $500 supports a student for a year.
