Joan and Segundo Velasquez (1998)

Joan and Segundo Velasquez are the founders of Mano a Mano Resources (Spanish for "hand to hand"), a non-profit organization that collects and distributes surplus medical supplies, equipment and health information from the United States to Bolivia. In its first year, Mano a Mano volunteers sent over 3,000 pounds of medical supplies, equipment and public health information to Combase, a non-profit clinic located outside of Cochambamba, Bolivia. Those items, with a conservative value of $60,000, were used in providing direct medical care to over 30,000 needy Bolivians. Last year, the organization transported more than 80,000 pounds of medical goods and raised enough money to build two clinics in Cochambamba. Today, Mano a Mano boasts a large group of volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours of service. Through the hard work, countless hours and perseverance of Joan and Segundo Velasquez, Mano a Mano continues to make a significant difference in the lives of Bolivians.
