Volunteer accomplishments, Mano a Mano - U.S.A.: Since
its inception in 1994, Mano a Mano's all-volunteer Twin Cities "staff" has
contributed over 61,000 hours performing the tasks required to run Mano
a Mano in the U.S.
During these 11 years about 125 volunteers have:
- Contacted dozens of potential donors of medical items, forming ongoing
relationships with health care programs that now set aside their surplus
for Mano
a Mano.
- Collected and packed more than 1.4 million pounds of medical supplies
and equipment.
- Arranged for transport of these donations to its distribution
center in Cochabamba, Bolivia's third largest city.
- Raised the funding required to support its programs in the U.S. and
Bolivia.
- Maintained all accounting, reporting and medical donation inventory
records required to operate an accountable organization.
- Prepared brochures, newsletters and press releases to keep others
informed of its work.
- Created a network of contacts with other organizations and persons
with experience in international health programs.
Mano a Mano simply
could not function in the U.S. without its talented and dedicated volunteers.
Mano a Mano - Bolivia: Bolivian volunteers
are equally critical to the work of Mano a Mano in Bolivia. Initially
operated entirely
by volunteers,
Mano a Mano - Bolivia hired staff in 2000 to prepare
for a dramatic expansion of its clinic construction and medical supply
distribution
programs. It
continues to depend heavily on enthusiastic and committed
volunteers.
- Cochabamba volunteers spent more than 9,100 hours last
year unpacking and processing medical inventory, furnishing and equipping
its 12 newly
constructed clinics and helping with all aspects of ongoing operations.
- Medical
professionals donated over 590 hours, providing specialist services
to Mano a Mano clinics on weekends.
- Community residents provided all unskilled
labor required to clear the land and help construct a clinic in their
communities. In 2005, these volunteers contributed an astonishing 66,600
hours. Their
involvement
deepened their commitment to maintain and use
their clinics and ensure that they will be sustained over the long term.
